Background of the Study
Impact metrics, such as citation counts, h-index, and altmetrics, have become essential tools for assessing research quality and influence. At Madonna University, these metrics are employed to evaluate academic performance, inform promotion decisions, and attract research funding. This study critically examines the effectiveness of various impact metrics in capturing the true influence of scholarly work. It discusses how different disciplines may require tailored evaluative approaches and highlights the discrepancies between quantitative and qualitative assessments. Recent advancements in digital analytics and real-time data have further refined these metrics, yet challenges persist regarding their consistency, accuracy, and potential biases. The study investigates whether impact metrics provide a fair representation of research quality and suggests ways to integrate these tools within a broader evaluative framework. Moreover, it considers the role of alternative metrics in complementing traditional measures, particularly for non-traditional research outputs (Chukwuma, 2023). The goal is to produce a balanced evaluation model that recognizes the nuances of diverse research contributions and supports evidence-based decision-making in academic assessments (Ibeh, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant advances, the reliance on impact metrics at Madonna University has exposed several limitations. In particular, the overemphasis on quantitative indicators may undervalue innovative yet low-citation research and create disparities between different academic disciplines. Furthermore, the variability in metric calculations and potential for gaming the system challenge the reliability of these tools. This study addresses these issues by evaluating the effectiveness of current impact metrics and identifying the underlying factors that compromise their validity. The aim is to propose refinements to ensure a balanced research assessment that accurately reflects academic contributions (Obianuju, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of current impact metrics in research evaluation.
To identify the challenges and limitations associated with these metrics.
To recommend improvements for a more holistic research assessment framework.
Research Questions
How effective are current impact metrics in evaluating research at Madonna University?
What limitations impact the reliability of these metrics?
What modifications can ensure a more balanced assessment of research quality?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it critically evaluates impact metrics used in research assessment, offering actionable recommendations to refine evaluation practices and ensure fair recognition of diverse scholarly contributions (Chukwu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating impact metrics at Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State and does not extend to non-metric-based assessment methods or other institutions.
